Is JJ Abrams a Plagiarizing Goth?
So Season 3 of Fringe is underway. Awesome. I really enjoy this show--it is like the X-Files but with more characters and a more structured story from the beginning. The opening theme is pretty catchy too. Apparently, Abrams, the director, actually came up with the theme song himself. Apparently.
So, um, err, yea, like, according to him, it like came to him when he was lying in bed . . . it ended up sounding like this--a nice piece
Nice, huh. The other, day, however, I was listening to my favorite online Industrial radio station, Digital Gunfire, and I came across a group called Fekton Fekler. The song playing, Limbic, struck me immediately as not only an extremely nice musical journey, but as rather familiar. The rather long intro itsself has background noises/voices that sound like they could come right form an episode of Fringe. However, at 1:13 I heard a familiar tune . . .
I said to myself "Ha! They sampled the Fringe theme!!!"
It was not a surprise, since a lot of Industrial groups take inspiration from just about everywhere, which is one of the things that makes the genre so great. However, upon further investigation, I found that the album, Angels of Analogue-Retrospective, came out in late 2007, roughly the time Fringe was being made. Was it perhaps a collaborative effort? Turns out the original song came out on Klang Klang Bedlam in 1998! So maybe it is a stretch, but I'll bet JJ Abrams was listening to his Fektion Fekler album collection before he went to bed that night . . .
So is Abrams a plagiarizer? I hope so, because that would mean he has great taste in music in my book, and he also has some good material to keep making dark and twisted material for us to enjoy.
